As mid-size pickups go, Ford Ranger and Nissan Frontier are two of the most recognizable, known for winning combinations of capability, safety, and technology ideal for nearly any towing or hauling job. Originally a run up through 2011, the new Ranger returns for 2019 "Built Ford Tough" in the full-size Ford F-150 tradition. 1997, on the other hand, saw the intro of the Frontier lineup, which replaced the celebrated Nissan D21 and upgraded it from compact status. Check out how they fare against one another, however, and it becomes clear that Ford Ranger comes out on top. See for yourself right here at Phil Waterford's Manteca Ford!
2019 Ford Ranger vs. 2019 Nissan Frontier
- 2.3-liter EcoBoost® engine, standard
- 310 pound-feet of torque pushing 270 horsepower -- ratings among the best in the class
- Ten-speed automatic transmission, also exclusive in the class
- Rear-wheel (4x2) and four-wheel (4x4) drivetrain choices
- Support for payloads up to 1,860 pounds maximum in SuperCab 4x2 builds, tow up to 7,500 pounds -- both class-toppers
- Terrain Management System and locking rear differential optional
- Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking comes standard
- Options include an 8-inch SYNC® 3 infotainment system, crowd-sourced Waze navigation, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Ford+Alexa support, and Wi-Fi Internet access using FordPass Connect
In XL, XLT and Lariat trims, 2019 Ranger options might be fewer than those of 2019 Frontier, coming in S, SV, SV V6, DR, PRO-4X®, and SL trims. However, its single engine defeats both of its rival's. Frontier and its 152-horsepower, 2.5-liter engine and 171 pound-feet fall behind Ranger, as does the available 261-horsepower, 4.0-liter V6 and its 281 pound-feet. Plus, Frontier only hauls up to 1,460 pounds in crew cab V6 models with a 4x2 drivetrain and only tows up to 6,720 pounds in a similarly equipped V6 King Cab.
- Standard 152-horsepower, 2.5-liter engine capable of shelling 171 pound-feet of torque
- Available 261-horsepower, 4.0-liter V6 engine putting out 281 pound-feet
- Five-speed manual and auto and six-speed manual transmission options
- Max payload support up to 1,460 pounds in models with a V6 engine, crew cab configuration, and 4x2 drivetrain; max towing support up to 6,720 pounds in V6, four-wheel-drive models with a King Cab
- Electronic locking rear differential in select models
- Passive safety systems ranging from vehicle dynamic control and a traction control system to hill start assist
- 5.8-inch NissanConnect and 7-inch touchscreens available, with a Nissan Navigation System optional
Nissan Frontier might offer a few extra trim options, but both its variety of available safety features and its technological prowess leave something to be desired. Ranger has a ton of security features to choose from in higher trims. Standard on XLT and Lariat, you can find those like lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, reverse sensing, and a blind-spot information system with trailer coverage, while, standard on Lariat, you can find adaptive cruise control. Moreover, as Frontier has no crowd-sourced navigation, neither Apple nor Android phone compatibility, no Alexa capability, and no Internet connectivity, Ranger shows itself better-equipped
